High Seas Treaty: A New Era for Ocean Protection

The High Seas Treaty will enter into force in January 2026 after ratification by over 60 countries, creating the first global framework to protect biodiversity in international waters. These areas, covering almost half of the planet, have long lacked coordinated rules, leaving marine ecosystems at risk.

The treaty is designed to help us achieve big things:

  • Create marine protected areas in international waters.

  • Require rigorous environmental impact assessments before activities take place.

  • Share scientific knowledge and marine technology more fairly.

  • Guarantee funding and capacity building for developing countries.

Ratification gives the treaty legal power, but wider participation will make it more effective. The first Conference of the Parties will establish governance structures, scientific guidance, and implementation plans. This agreement offers a unique chance to safeguard ocean life, strengthen international cooperation, and ensure healthy, well-managed oceans for the future.
